The first meeting between the
two sides, in front of 5,466 at Sealand Road. Fred Bennett
scores the Chester goal from the penalty spot, our first
successful penalty in the Football League. Jack Halliday
scores for Rovers.
2) Chester 4 (Gale,
Alderson, Sargeant, Wrightson) Doncaster Rovers
0 – 16 January 1937 FA Cup 3rd Round
The first FA Cup meeting and
Chester secure a convincing victory over their Second
Division opponents. Chester’s goalscoring legend,
Arthur Gale, scores his first goal for the club on his
return from West Bromwich Albion.
3) Chester 1 (Burden)
Doncaster Rovers 3 (Tindill, Jordan, Thompson)
– 4 September 1946 Division Three North
The first post war game at Sealand
Road and Rovers win easily. The Yorkshire side go on
to finish top of the table with a record number of points
and only three defeats throughout the season. Goalkeeper
George Scales and Charles Higgins make their Chester
league debuts.
4) Chester 3 (Ryden
2, Talbot) Doncaster Rovers 0 – 24
April 1965 Division Four
The final game of Chester’s
record goalscoring season and Hugh Ryden needs two goals
to become the fifth player in the forward line to reach
twenty goals in all competitions. With all attacks centred
on Ryden he scores one in each half to reach the target.
5) Doncaster Rovers
0 Chester 2 (Webber, Dearden) –
9 December 1970 FA Cup 2nd Round replay
After a 1-1 draw at Sealand Road
Chester secure a surprise 2-0 victory over their Third
Division opponents at Belle Vue. The first Chester goals
is scored by Keith Webber, his first for the club since
joining from Doncaster in the summer.
6) Doncaster Rovers
3 (Wilcox, Humes, Yates) Chester City
4 (Leonard 3, Pugh) – 17
December 1993 Division Three
Mark Leonard scores his only
hat-trick for the club as City recover a 3-1 deficit
to win 4-3 with goals in the 70th, 83rd and 84 minutes.
One of the Rovers goals is scored by Kevin Hulme, previously
on loan at the Deva. Chester are promoted at the end
of the season.
7) Chester City 6 (Milner
4, Alsford, Jones) Doncaster Rovers 0
8 February 1997 Division Three
An easy victory for Chester and
a personal triumph for Andy Milner who is still the
last City player to score four goals in a game. Iain
Jenkins spurns the opportunity to score his first goal
for the club by missing a penalty. Rovers keeper Dean
Williams is sent off in the closing minutes.
8) Doncaster Rovers
2 (Helliwell, Smith) Chester City 1
(Jones) 2 December 1997 Division
Three
Only 864 supporters are present
to see Doncaster’s first victory of the season
at the 21st attempt. One of the Rovers goals is scored
by Ian Helliwell who played nine games for Chester in
1996. Jon Jones scores his second and final goal for
City, both were scored against Doncaster.
9) Chester City 2 (Flitcroft,
Rimmer) Doncaster Rovers 1 (Mike)
11 April 1998 Division Three
Chester gain some revenge for
their defeat earlier in the season and in the process
send Rovers down to the Conference. All the goals come
in the first half with David Flitcroft scoring his second
penalty of the season.
10) Chester City 3 (Beesley
2, Carden) Doncaster Rovers 0 22 August
2000 Conference
A day of firsts. Chester’s
first home game in the Conference and Mark Beesley scores
the club’s first Conference goal after only 45
seconds on his first start. Jimmy Kelly is sent off
for Doncaster while Carl Ruffer is sent off for Chester.
