CALLING ALL BLUES FANS
Like all loyal Chester City fans I felt very sad when I heard that our, once proud, little Club had been placed into Administration by the Board of Directors of CCFC.

Relegation out of the Football League is hard enough to bear but Administration brings home the seriousness of the Clubs decline. As well as the limited finances and continuing embargo on player transfers we now face a 10points deduction in whichever League we are offered a place in. Hardly cause for optimism for next season. Stephen Vaughan recently stated that if we did end up in the BSP the Club would ‘hit the ground running’ – well, I’m sorry Stephen, this latest news suggests we are more likely to hit the ground with a sickening thud and, given our depleted playing staff of seven full-time professionals, it could take a very long time for the Club to recover.

It is more than 6 years since the ISA were actively involved in campaigning but we feel it is now imperative that someone stands-up on behalf of the loyal City fans. Therefore, we have decided to organise a public meeting of ALL fans of CCFC to determine a way forward in support of the Club we love. It doesn’t matter if you are a member of the ISA, the Supporters Trust, the Officials or the Exiles, as long as you like Chester City – we need you to attend. If you are, like many others, concerned about the current crisis and want to play a part in deciding how we can safeguard the future of our Club then turn up for the meeting which will be held at the Deva Showbar in Station Road, Chester (the old Royal Mail Club) on Thursday 28th May for a 7.45pm start. We hope to have representatives from all the other Supporters Groups alongside us on the night.

Now is the time to do something before it’s too late – so be there and be ready to get involved.

Chairman of the ISA

CCFC FAN’S MEETING – 3/12/08
The impending crisis over support (or lack of it) down at the Deva Stadium prompted City fan, Kevin Wilding, to call an impromptu meeting of CCFC fans to the old Royal Mail Club in City Road last Wednesday. Given the short notice it was not surprising that only 40-something people attended.

The main attraction of the night was the attendance of Stephen Vaughan who, in true pugilistic manner, faced his critics and responded positively to any questions from the floor. He admitted that it was a struggle, forking out large sums of money just to keep the Club afloat, and wasn’t sure if he would be able to maintain the level of support without some further investment from outside. The meeting were re-assured to hear, however, that he would not be selling the Club to John Batchelor or anyone else “if it was not in the best interests of Chester City”. He indicated that the Development Project was still progressing and that the Council had been very helpful in this matter. It was hoped that if the Project was completed it would provide the Club with a massive investment. Initially his main concern was the reduction in fan numbers through the turnstiles – “bums on seats is what we need to offset the shortfall in our December income”.

The meeting then debated a) what was causing the reductions in the home attendance and b) what could be done to turn it around. Following comments made by the Trust Secretary, however, Stephen made some caustic remarks in return and accused them of failing the fans because of their negativity towards him and the Club, using internet websites whilst hiding behind stupid names and boycotting home games. Under pressure from SV, Adrian admitted to not going to recent home games but added that he was now living in Leeds and had not posted on Deva Chat for sometime. There was further criticism for the Trust, from SV, over their continuing association with Paul Baker, following his failed attempt to buy CCFC 12 months ago, and the manner in which the Trust advised the Club about the transfer of loan notes from Paul to themselves. Whilst some in the room commended Adrian for having the ‘balls’ to turn up many were critical about the Trusts lack of direction.

Feelings eventually calmed and it was suggested before closing that fans submitted ideas (on paper) which may help the Club win back support – ideas to Kevin who would review and submit to CCFC for consideration. It was agreed that another meeting would be held on Wednesday 7th January 2009 at 7.30 p.m. in the Blues Bar.

What were my conclusions – it was nice to see and hear people wanting to get involved in doing something to help the Club (well done Kevin) but the real test will come at the next meeting when there is less excuse for not attending. Before then the Trust needs to re-think their position as, currently, their credibility is shaky with vast sections of CCFC fans. Whilst their actions, of late, may have invited some criticism it would be unfair to put all the blame on them. If fans want a more representative Trust then they must get involved, become a member, attend meetings and then have their say about how it is run. In the meantime the ISA will be liasing with all the Supporters Groups to discuss ways in which we can assist the Club during this difficult period.

Best wishes to you all - Peter Mitchell - Chairman

HELPING THE CLUB IN WHATEVER WAY WE CAN!
No, this does not mean that the ISA has discovered a mysterious benefactor to buy the Club (oh, that we could). Recent results down at the Deva Stadium have ensured a less than happy start to the New Year for the City faithful. The realisation that we are being drawn into a relegation dog-fight is now only too real. What to do? I wish I had the answer but like most ordinary City fans I haven’t. The ISA, like other Fan’s Groups, are powerless to exert any meaningful influence on matters concerning the Owners rights to sell or not. He is either unwilling, or perhaps unable, to put more money into the Club to strengthen the playing staff at this critical time and it must be very frustrating for Bobby Williamson to watch his Team disintegrating before his eyes (and ours, of course). There is little Fan’s Groups can do, at the moment, except to be there for the lads and continue to give them our support and encouragement.

Whilst recent events at the Club have been “difficult” the one redeeming feature has been the emergence of young talent into the squad. Like most small clubs, with limited finances, Chester City are finding the development of home grown players is essential to their survival in the Football League. To this end we owe a great deal to Simon Davies and Mark Newman, together with their hardworking teams, for what they have achieved so far. Like all Youth set-ups they struggle to make ends meet and rely on donations and fundraising events to supplement their income. This is one area where we know we can make a difference with our declared policy for 2008 being to provide greater support for the youngsters associated with the Club. We are pleased to announce that the ISA’s Annual Fundraiser will be held at the Blues Bar on Friday 7th March 2008 with proceeds shared with the Centre-of-Excellence. We believe, like many others connected with the Club, that our future lies in the development of young players of all age groups flowing through to the Youth set-up and, hopefully into the 1st Team squad (as has happened this year). Within this Newsletter you will find an article written by the Manager of the C-of-E (Mark Newman) in which he explains his role in the Centre and the importance of maintaining it.

Finally, with the Club going through a period of uncertainty, the continued wellbeing of the ISA ensures that City fans are heard whoever is in charge at the Deva Stadium. It is vital for the future of both the ISA and the C-of-E that our shared fundraiser is a success and I would ask you to give it your fullest support in whatever way you can.

Many thanks – Peter MitchelL

AWAITING DEVELOPMENTS AT DEVA STADIUM
Like most City fans I was surprised by the announcement, last weekend, that Stephen Vaughan had resigned his positions of Chairman and Director of CCFC. I cannot say I was shocked by the news because there had been talk for some time that various consortiums were interested in purchasing the Club. It is too soon to say whether SV will sell (especially if the right offer doesn’t materialise) or merely reconsider his decision and rejoin the Board.

Whatever he decides we should all be grateful for his contribution to the Club during the last six years. Indeed, without his help CCFC might now be defunct or languishing in the Unibond League. Therefore we owe him our thanks for not only rescuing us at that critical time but for having the ambition and financial muscle to get us back into the Football League. Today we have the best Manager and Players for a very long time and are handily placed for the play-offs at least. Which only makes the timing of his announcement so much more surprising. Perhaps he was frustrated by the lack of support from Public Bodies or through the turnstiles and just felt enough was enough.

We may never know the full reasons for his decision but thankfully several groups have expressed an interest in buying the Club.

Paul Baker would be a popular choice amongst the City faithful but he must not let his heart rule his head in deciding whether to get further involved. As a businessman he, like all potential buyers, must do “due diligence” in order to see what they are letting themselves in for. The fact that Paul is involving the Supporters Trust from the outset is good and whilst they have indicated their support they are wisely awaiting further developments before sounding the rallying call. The ISA has long experience of this type of situation and, believe me, it is wiser to let the dust settle and see who you are dealing with before getting totally involved and calling for assistance from the wider public.

It is perfectly understandable that fans will be anxious and want to do something for the Club – if so, then the best way would be to get down to the Deva Stadium this Saturday and show your support by getting behind the Manager and Players.

Come on you Blues!!

A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE

NO AWAY DAY BLUES FOR CITY FAITHFUL!
Chester City have made a superb start to the new season but it is their away form which has been the mainstay of their current League position. This is a just reward for the hundreds of loyal fans who support the Blues on their travels. A special mention should be given to those who made the long journey to Grimsby, last week, despite problems with the Away Travel transport – well done each and every one of you.

TAMING OF THE SHREWS BUT AT WHAT COST?
Support at Home games is still a problem however and whilst a couple of poor results may have affected attendances it is unlikely, in my view, to be the reason for the poor home support against Shrewsbury. More likely it was decision to make this game all-ticket with kick-off at 12.00 on a Sunday. Why, I ask, when previous matches with the Shrews have rarely resulted in crowd trouble. Yes we all want to be safe going to and from the ground but does this really justify the sort of Policing experienced last Sunday. Scores of Police/Cars/Vans, re-routing of traffic and all this to control a crowd of 3,000 at a small lower league football match. Sadly the nuisance doesn’t stop there for the Club will, no doubt, be hit with increased Policing costs as well as losing many thousands of pounds because of a reduction in turnstile revenue. Surely a more sensible approach could be adopted that will be less costly for all concerned.

ISA NEWS
Closer to home the ISA Committee has been discussing several fund raising options if only to pursue your AGM wish for sponsorship of the Clubs Youth set-up. You only have to look at all the new young players in the 1st Team Squad to appreciate the valuable work done by the Centre-of-Excellence. Further details of our support for this venture will be announced in due course.

In the meantime WE still need your support so if you haven’t returned your member-ship renewal then please do so a.s.a.p. If you cannot find the renewal form (included with you Newsletter) then simply put your name and address on the back of your cheque and send it to:- Chester City ISA, PO Box 308, Chester CH1 5ZF (Adults £5, OAP/Concessions £2.50). Remember, it’s a small price to pay for being part of a fan-based group whose only interest is the well being of the Club.

Many thanks

DAVE ARTELL – ISA PLAYER OF THE SEASON 2006/7

ISA Treasurer Keith Musson is shown presenting the Player of the Year award for 2006/7 to Dave Artell.

NEW COMMITTEE
There have been changes to the ISA committee following the AGM. Peter Mitchell steps up from vice chairman to chairman, which George Rogers moves from chairman to secretary. Keith Musson remains as treasurer. Martin Williams, Alison Dean and Charlie Lambert have all stepped down from the committee.

WINNERS
David Parkinson, Nigel Lloyd, Graham Webb and Mr T D Owen were randomly drawn from all ISA members to win VIP seats at the home game v Hereford United, when the ISA were matchball sponsors. They were hosted by committee member Keith Musson.

STATEMENT FROM THE CHESTER CITY ISA
Chester City Independent Supporters Association is totally opposed to suggestions put forward by the Chester City FC chairman Stephen Vaughan to change the name of the club. We believe and hope that the chairman is not serious about this proposal, because any attempt to change the name would serve only to alienate the club’s fan base, especially those who are still attending matches.

The ISA is fully supportive of the chairman’s desire to widen usage of the Saunders Honda Stadium. The ISA wants to see Chester City Council adopt a proactive attitude to enable this to happen. The ISA also understands the chairman’s frustration at the disappointing attendances recently. We do not however believe that changing the name of the club to Chester Halton or any similar alternative is the correct way to achieve either goal.

Chester City has been the official name of the club for almost a quarter of a century and a large proportion of the club’s current support has grown up knowing no other name. Even before the official adoption of the Chester City name, our club had been informally and affectionately known as “City” for many years.

Being called Chester Halton would not attract any additional support. The club could change its name to Real Deva Galacticos and attendances would still not improve if the home crowd saw only one win and only five goals in three months, as is the present situation.

The way to improve attendances and cultivate a feelgood factor is to produce exciting, entertaining, and hopefully winning football on the pitch, something the supporters have not seen enough of this season.

We welcome the chairman’s assurance that there is no intention to move the club from its present home at the Saunders Honda Stadium, and call on him to abandon any idea of changing our name ahead of the forthcoming AGM.

A QUESTION OF FOOTBALL
Chester City director Paul Baker scored the winning points in dramatic style to give Terry Owen a winning return to the Saunders Honda Stadium on Thursday March 8th. Paul correctly answered the final question of the final round of the ISA-organised A QUESTION OF FOOTBALL to give himself, Terry Owen and Bob Delgado a 73-72 victory over Gary Bennett, Stuart Rimmer and Arthur Albiston. The event at the Saunders Honda Stadium raised over £300 for the ISA.

Charlie Lambert, who hosted the night, said: “We raised more money than we expected and we are really grateful to everyone who came along. Big thanks also to Bob Gray, Ken Baker and Sarah Smith at Chester City for all their help.”

IT'S ABOUT FEELING GOOD
The first phase of season 2006-07 was nothing if not inconsistent. Promising August, dire September, encouraging October. But one thing which was all too consistent was the disappointing numbers making the trek down Bumpers Lane.

Failure to sell out against Wrexham was embarrassing while many other fixtures saw the home support barely creep above the 2000 mark. Results were only part of the reason. We had good results which weren’t followed by any noticeable hike in the attendances. The real problem was the desperate lack of any feelgood factor around the club. Supporters had become disillusioned by seeing popular players leave, by the chairman diluting his commitment via Widnes RL, by being slagged off by various personalities within the club for not showing up, by a series of bodyblows on and off the field since winning the Conference, and by the lack of any apparent plan to improve the overall stature of the club.

Making the SHS the centrepiece of a Sports Village, mooted last season, was bold thinking, but after false dawns in the past we need to see concrete process. And yet, good things HAVE been happening. The club’s training arrangements are better organised this season and the introduction of the Trueblue fan card has gone some way towards addressing supporters’ complaints. Admitting youngsters free to the Hartlepool game was another plus. That’s the sort of vision which, if applied consistently, will raise spirits all round – because if the fans feel they’re being trampled on it’s no wonder they decide to stay away.

VOICE OF THE ISA
Whoever took the decision to make Stephen Vaughan Junior captain at the start of season 2006/07 gave us a problem. The ISA is not here to criticise individual players but there’s no doubt that SVJ’s possession of the armband created massive controversy. SVJ is a young player who had a tough enough task as the son of the chairman without being handed the captaincy. Until this season, he wasn’t even a regular starter. It was a daft decision which, more than anything, did the player no favours whatsoever.
