Chronicle Article 13 October 2000

The news that the Club have been visited by the FA Compliance Unit to investigate financial affairs must be disturbing to everyone. Particularly for the many loyal fans who want only to celebrate the current vein of form which has seen the Blues steadily rise up the table. As we await developments, what concerns us is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. That will never change.

Graham Barrow's record is going from strength to strength but only time will tell whether we can go the distance. There have been good, mediocre and indifferent performances in recent weeks but it's points that count, and as long as they keep coming in three's, not even the purists can have any right to complain. With Yeovil and Rushden both dropping points the gap is closing and the players can move into the second quarter of the season with optimism and growing confidence. It is all being achieved by trying to play good football, and that can only be applauded.

Another brace by Steve Whitehall has more than justified Graham's attempts to sign him on a permanent contract and it is hoped that the deal is completed on schedule today (Friday). Andy Porter's negotiations with Wigan are still holding up his move and progress is desirable before he is snapped up elsewhere. The crop of injuries and illness already encountered has been well-covered for by the younger players, but the addition of proven quality provides essential insurance for the winter months when loss of form, tiredness and suspensions play an increasing role.

It is hoped that this week's reported investigations do not hinder the current progress of the squad. They have enough to do in preparing for another tricky away game. Whilst the trip to Forest Green is a must for the small band of City fans who have already visited every League ground, once should be enough for everyone, fans and players alike. Like last season, we can play a part by giving vocal support right from the start. Now more than ever.

ISA activities have been largely unseen recently, although there is much preparation going into the forthcoming events. The Sportspersons Evening featuring John H Stracey, David Johnson, Frankie Allen and Bobby Brown will take place on Friday 10th Nov at the Royal Mail Club. Tickets, price £15, are available by postal application (cheques payable to Chester City ISA) or from George Rogers (01244 536466), Mike Aplas (01244 312401) and Mickey Clifford (01244 347782). Tables are also available for sponsorship. The next members meeting is Monday 30th Oct with guest speakers to be confirmed next week.

Monday saw the funeral of ISA member John Parry, a lifelong City supporter. John's untimely death was a shock to his many friends and relations and he will be sadly missed.

This weeks' ISA competition is for two tickets for next weeks local(ish) derby against Leigh RMI. "City came from behind to win against Kettering; who did they last beat at the Deva after going a goal behind?" Answers should be sent to the address below arriving no later than Thursday next. If you have any other comments why not write to us at the address at the foot of the page.
