Chronicle Article 15 September 2000

It is perhaps a unique situation for a body of football fans to be offered the opportunity to continually express their view in a newspaper. It is therefore a privilege that the column afforded the ISA during Administration has become a regular feature. The ISA will continue to reflect supporters' views and to provide factual information and comment. It has never been the intention to abuse this column space by attempting to manipulate opinion or divulging sensitive information.

The above extract is from the column of 17th March. The situation hasn't changed. There is an unwritten understanding with this newspaper as to our responsibilities in terms of content. We would expect the Chronicle to censor any unsuitable or problematic material and we pride ourselves that there has not been a single occasion when difficulties have arisen. Furthermore, the column will not be used to react to criticism from undoubtedly well meaning supporters. We take it on board, but still endeavour to be a responsible independent organ for the supporters of Chester City FC. If the ISA committee needs to make a statement, it will be through the normal media channels.

The past ten days have seen several loyal servants resign from Club employment, the latest being the safety officer and around thirty stewards following Tuesday's game. Some may be ISA members but whatever has taken place between these parties and the Club is not intrinsically an ISA matter. However, because these incidents reflect yet again on the Club and could potentially inconvenience supporters in a number of ways, they must be of concern to us. We have said that we want to be able to support our club without the baggage of politics and dispute. We can all do without the latest situation that, in the extreme, could have prevented football from taking place. The Club have acted very quickly in recruiting alternative stewards for the Hayes fixture, which will be short of away fans unless petrol finds its way quickly to the pumps.

Although the "new derby" fixture on Tuesday felt the effect of the petrol shortage, attendances this season have actually increased compared to this time last year. The reason why is anyone's guess. Possible factors are the novelty of seeing alternatives to Hartlepool and Barnet, the anticipation of wins against perceived "inferior" opposition, the return of Graham Barrow, and the new ticket incentives. This must all be good news with respect to the club's finances and it is hoped the trend continues.

Unfortunately the team has not been able to produce the results to match the crowds' expectations, due largely to the lack of goals from the strikers. That is not criticism: that is fact and it's a problem shared by many teams. With the player budget already exceeded, Graham Barrow has little room in which to manoeuvre. Patience is required from everyone as he tries to find a winning formula.

Members should have received the latest Independents newsletter and know significant progress has been made with the formation of the Supporters Trust. The next ISA Members meeting will be Monday 25th Sept at the Royal Mail Club. Guest Speaker Nick Harrison of the Evening Leader. The following Monday sees the first ISA Quiz Night at the Cross Keys.
